In this group you will find software that is used to remove viruses and "spy ware" from your computer.  Spy ware programs take up resources on your computer, therefore making it slower, less responsive.  Some spy ware programs will also send you private information without your knowledge to third parties.  One of the biggest threats to computer users today is spy ware.

How do you know if there is spy ware on your computer?  If you can answer "Yes" to any or all of these questions, you have spy ware:

Do you notice an increase in pop-up ads?

Is the performance of your PC slower than before?

Has your home page changed by itself?

When you do a web search, do the results appear different?

Have you clicked "Yes" to allowing installation of screensavers, time synchronization tools or other "free" programs that ask you to allow themselves to install?

In the virus and spy ware removal software category we have tested both types of software, free and paid.  Both have their advantages, with the paid version obviously being a better choice.  We have tested and used all of the below listed programs and recommend them all.  For complete peace of mind, the paid programs, like Spy Sweeper, will give you the best performance and remove the most threats.  Keep in mind that most programs are designed to either remove spy ware or viruses, trojans or worms, but not both.  So you will need both an anti-spy ware program and an anti-virus program.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE (Spy Ware Removal)
Ad-Aware is designed to provide advanced protection from known Data-mining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, selected traditional Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components. With the release of Ad-Aware SE Personal edition, Lavasoft takes the fight against Spyware to the next level.

Ad-Aware SE is a free program for personal use.  It does a terrific job of scanning for spy ware, but does not prevent spy ware from infecting your computer.  Lavasoft does offer upgrades that are not free for spy ware prevention.

WinTasks Pro (Process Viewer and Analyzer)

Windows XP and Windows 2000/2003 offer a utility called Task Manager, which shows all processes running on your computer.  What Task Manager does not do is tell you what these processes are and why they are running.  Enter WinTasks Pro. With WinTasks Pro you will know what each process does, why it is there, what the priority of the process is and a plethora of other information.  In addition it will also allow you to change the priority of the process, delete the process and have complete control of your computer.  There are other utilities out there that provide good information, but none that give you as much in detail information as WinTasks Pro.
